I've never seen the movie (unfortunately) but I've heard a lot about it.
I always thought that picture represented how Jack became part of the hotel when he was possessed by it.
But that it's been interpreted many other ways, too.

the ending of the shining always confuses me
was jack the original mr grady (hence him being in the 1920s picture) and in the 1970s he is infact a ghost? did the hotel take him back in time? is that picture a photo of everyone who died in the hotel? if so, why was it taken in the 1920s if the film is set in the 1970s?
